MIDI sound module voice-sounds are called "Patches", from the ancient systems that created voicing with actual patch-cords.
Although many custom instalations differ widely from the "standard", manufacturers of sound modules for general use want their
equipment to behave "as expected, just better." In the interest of sounding a piano when a piano is expected, and a trumpet when a trumpet is expected,
the manufaturers settled on a standard set of patches, "General MIDI Level I."
General MIDI Level 1 Instrument Patch Map
- The names of the instruments indicate what sort of sound will
be heard when that instrument number is selected on the GM1 sound module.
- The General MIDI Level 1 instrument sounds are grouped by
families. In each family are 8 specific instruments.
